Founded in 2023 by Brianna Lizotte and Ethan Graves, Learn Métis History was created to address the lack of Métis representation within Alberta’s curriculum and to bring Métis stories, voices, and culture into classrooms in meaningful and engaging ways. Through interactive workshops presented through the eyes of a musician, we engage students of all ages to connect with Métis history not as a distant footnote, but as a living and vibrant culture that continues to thrive today.

We also realized that many students grow into adulthood knowing little about the Métis people beyond brief mentions in history books about the Fur Trade. Our mission is to change that narrative by sharing the richness, resilience, and beauty of Métis culture through music, dance, storytelling, and community connection. By actually gaining hands on experiences with playing the musical Spoons and dancing the Red River Jig. Students gain a deeper understanding of the strength, creativity, and cultural pride that continue to shape Métis identity across the homeland and through generations.

Learn Métis History is committed to fostering awareness, respect, and celebration of Métis culture while creating spaces where students can learn, participate, and see Indigenous history as an essential and living part of Canada’s story.
