Interactive Stories With Our

Assembly Series

Bring the rich history and vibrant culture of the Métis to life in your school with an immersive assembly workshop that blends storytelling, music, movement, and hands-on exploration.

Students will journey back in time as they step into the lives of early Métis people. Guided by captivating stories, they’ll follow the paths of the Voyageurs—learning about the fur trade by handling real animal pelts and experiencing the everyday realities of life on the land and water. As they paddle and portage from Montreal to Fort Edmonton, students will gain insight into the music, hardships, and triumphs that shaped Canada’s historic trade routes. They'll even get the chance to barter for goods like beads and sashes, just as the Métis once did. Students will also try on both traditional and modern Métis sashes, discovering the artistry, cultural significance, and practical technologies woven into every thread.

But the story doesn’t end with the fur trade. Through the journey of Michelle Lizotte, students will learn what happened when the Voyageurs were no longer needed—and how Métis identity continued to grow and thrive. They'll explore how Métis culture evolved into vibrant community life, expressed through kitchen parties, competitive jigging, and the enduring legacy of music and dance.

This all-ages workshop offers students an unforgettable, meaningful connection to Métis history—told not just through words, but through rhythm, movement, and cultural experience.
